Dalam memanfaatkan alam, manusia terkadang tidak memerhatikan dampak yang akan ditimbulkan. Beberapa bentuk kerusakan lingkungan yang dipengaruhi oleh aktivitas manusia, antara lain, meliputi hal-hal berikut ini.
a. Pencemaran Lingkungan
Pencemaran disebut juga dengan polusi, terjadi karena masuknya bahan-bahan pencemar (polutan) yang dapat mengganggu keseimbangan lingkungan. Bahan-bahan pencemar tersebut pada umumnya merupakan efek samping dari aktivitas manusia dalam pembangunan. Berdasarkan jenisnya, pencemaran dapat dibagi menjadi empat, yaitu pencemaran udara, pencemaran tanah, pencemaran air, dan pencemaran suara. Pencemaran udara yang ditimbulkan oleh ulah manusia antara lain, disebabkan oleh asap sisa hasil pembakaran, khususnya bahan bakar fosil (minyak dan batu bara) yang ditimbulkan oleh kendaraan bermotor, mesin-mesin pabrik, dan mesin-mesin pesawat terbang atau roket. Dampak yang ditimbulkan dari pencemaran udara, antara lain, berkurangnya kadar oksigen (O2) di udara, menipisnya lapisan ozon (O3), dan bila bersenyawa dengan air hujan akan menimbulkan hujan asam yang dapat merusak dan
mencemari air, tanah, atau tumbuhan. Pencemaran tanah disebabkan karena sampah plastik ataupun sampah anorganik lain yang tidak dapat diuraikan di dalam tanah. Pencemaran tanah juga dapat disebabkan oleh penggunaan pupuk atau obat-obatan kimia yang digunakan secara berlebihan dalam pertanian, sehingga tanah kelebihan zat-zat tertentu yang justru dapat menjadi racun bagi tanaman. Dampak rusaknya ekosistem tanah adalah semakin berkurangnya tingkat kesuburan tanah sehingga lambat laun tanah tersebut akan menjadi tanah kritis yang tidak dapat diolah atau dimanfaatkan.
Pencemaran air terjadi karena masuknya zat-zat polutan yang tidak dapat diuraikan dalam air, seperti deterjen, pestisida, minyak, dan berbagai bahan kimia lainnya, selain itu, tersumbatnya aliran sungai oleh tumpukan sampah juga dapat menimbulkan polusi atau pencemaran. Dampak yang ditimbulkan dari pencemaran air adalah rusaknya ekosistem perairan, seperti sungai, danau atau waduk, tercemarnya air tanah, air permukaan, dan air laut. Pencemaran suara adalah tingkat kebisingan yang sangat mengganggu kehidupan manusia, yaitu suara yang memiliki kekuatan > 80 desibel. Pencemaran suara dapat ditimbulkan dari suara kendaraan bermotor, mesin kereta api, mesin jet pesawat, mesin-mesin pabrik, dan instrumen musik. Dampak pencemaran suara menimbulkan efek psikologis dan kesehatan bagi manusia, antara lain, meningkatkan detak jantung, penurunan pendengaran karena kebisingan (noise induced hearing damaged), susah tidur, meningkatkan tekanan darah, dan dapat menimbulkan stres.
